Mathunjana Nkwanyana - Guardian of a King

Central to the royal history of the AmaNkwanyana is Mathunjana Nkwanyana, son of Sixaba, a man whose courage and loyalty permanently altered the course of Zulu history.

Mathunjana is celebrated for saving the life of Prince Mpande, who was under threat of execution by his half-brother, King Dingane kaSenzangakhona. Through wisdom, bravery, and unwavering loyalty, Mathunjana concealed and protected Mpande during a time of extreme danger. This act of preservation ultimately enabled Mpande to survive, ascend the throne, and reign as King Mpande kaSenzangakhona, ruler of the Zulu Kingdom from 1840 to 1872.

Earlier in his life, Mathunjana encountered King Shaka Zulu while hiding in the forest after his family had been killed during warfare. Humbly requesting to serve as a herdsman, he was accepted into the royal household—an act that reflected both his resilience and their cognition of his character by the Zulu royal authority.

In gratitude for Mathunjana’s decisive role in saving his life, King Mpande granted him land at eNgudwini near Showe, an area still known today as eMaNkwanyaneni, marking formal royal recognition of the AmaNkwanyana family.
